Classical Period of Music
The Classical period was from about 1750-1820. Classical music has a lighter sound than Baroque music. Variety of keys, melodies, rhythms and dynamics were popular during the Classical period. The Orchestra increased in size and range; the harpsichord was no longer used, and the woodwind became its own section. The harpsichord was replaced by the piano (or fortepiano). Sonatas, trio, string quartet, symphony, concerto, serenade and divertimento were composed during the Classical period. Some popular composers of this period were Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven.
